Avery SPOT

Avery SPOT
Pavilion · New York, USA · 2021
A cloud floating above Avery Plaza — an LED inflatable canopy tethered to century-old brick halls.
Avery SPOT is a temporary inflatable pavilion floating between Avery, Fayerweather and Schermerhorn Halls on Columbia’s Morningside campus. Its soft, cloud-like form contrasts with the century-old red brick — a backdrop for commencement by day, and the glowing heart of the campus by night.
The roughly 272 kg canopy is made of PVC-coated nylon, anchored to four steel beams in Avery and Fayerweather Halls and four anchor points, and fabricated by areacubica. A rain chain sheds water off the platform so load never accumulates on the structure.
LED strips inside the membrane softly light the underside of the canopy at night, drawing power from solar panels at the base. Cedar benches built into the timber platform gather people beneath this free-form roof. Avery SPOT opened for the Columbia GSAPP commencement on April 29, 2021, celebrating a safe reunion on campus.
