동네의 기억과 감정을 담아 도시를 옷처럼 입을 수 있게 한 파사드, 금속 위에 프린팅된 6,685개의 '디지털 벽돌'.
2025 서울도시건축비엔날레의 중심 설치물인 Humanise Wall을 위해, 성수동 커뮤니티와 함께 만든 파사드입니다. "당신의 도시 건물은 어떤 감정을 불러일으키는가"라는 단순한 질문에서 출발해, 성수동의 집합적 기억과 감정을 파사드에 입혔습니다.
Humanise Wall은 건축이 우리 감정에 어떻게 영향을 주는지, 그 대화를 이끌어내기 위한 길이 90m, 높이 16m의 구조물입니다. 그중 일부를 이루는 본 프로젝트를 위해 저희는 다층적인 성수의 모습을 커뮤니티와 함께 건물 외관으로 재해석했습니다.
참여적 워크숍과 직접 만든 감정 설문지를 통해 31명의 커뮤니티 구성원은 57개 건물의 파사드에 관련된 감정과 기억을 기록했습니다. 각 감정은 Russell의 정서 원형모형(circumplex)을 통해 색으로 변환하고, AI로 업스케일한 성수동 풍경 사진과 짝지어 6,685개의 벽돌 크기 '기억 단위'로 나눴습니다. 한 면은 감정을 색상으로 담아내고 다른 면은 도시의 풍경 조각을 담아냅니다.
EfficientNetV2, t-SNE, RasterFairy로 벽돌을 시각적 유사도에 따라 하나의 모자이크로 배열하고, 이를 금속 패널에 프린팅했습니다. 이 디지털 파사드는 멀리서는 하나의 반짝이는 패턴으로 보이고, 가까이 다가서면 철문, 차양, 팝업 구조물, 덕트, 간판 같은 '서울스러운' 요소가 벽돌마다의 기억과 함께 드러납니다. 서울비엔날레 특별상을 수상했습니다.

A façade that lets a city be worn like cloth, carrying a neighbourhood's memories and emotions — 6,685 'digital bricks' printed on metal.
A façade built with the Seongsu community for the Humanise Wall, centrepiece of the 2025 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism. Starting from a simple question — what emotions do the buildings of your city evoke? — it clothes the façade in the collective memory and emotion of Seongsu.
The Humanise Wall is a 90 m long, 16 m high structure built to spark a conversation about how architecture affects our emotions. For our part of it, we worked with the community to reinterpret the many layers of Seongsu as a building façade.
Through participatory workshops and a custom emotion survey, 31 community members recorded the emotions and memories tied to the façades of 57 buildings. Each emotion was translated into colour through Russell's circumplex model of affect, paired with AI-upscaled photographs of Seongsu, and split into 6,685 brick-sized 'memory units' — one face holding the emotion as colour, the other a fragment of the cityscape.
Using EfficientNetV2, t-SNE and RasterFairy, the bricks were arranged into a single mosaic by visual similarity and printed onto metal panels. From afar this digital façade reads as one shimmering pattern; up close, 'Seoul-like' elements — iron doors, awnings, pop-up structures, ducts and signage — emerge with the memory held in each brick. Awarded the Seoul Biennale Special Prize.
