K‑facade Design System

K‑facade Design System

Facade / Research · Seoul, KR · 2023

A bottom-up facade design system exploring the cultural identity of Korean architecture through generative AI and data analytics.

The K-Facade Design System is a design methodology that seeks to redefine the cultural identity of Korean architecture, blurred within a pluralised contemporary society. Built on generative AI and data analytics, it integrates design, fabrication, meaning-making, identity analysis and participatory feedback into a single process, viewing architectural identity as the product of collective consensus on material, form, place and memory.

Moving away from expert-driven top-down methods, this project is a bottom-up design methodology that reconstructs the identity of Korean architecture using public data and AI. It first generates new facade images that dissolve the boundary between tradition and modernity, through text-based generative AI and latent-space interpolation.

These 2D images are given depth through monocular depth estimation, their detailed architectural elements precisely segmented with SAM (Segment Anything Model), then realised as physical mockups through a digital fabrication process using a KUKA robot.

For quantitative analysis of identity, around 6,000 images of Korean architecture were collected and clustered with the t-SNE algorithm to grasp their formal characteristics and historical context. Finally, the generated designs are cross-checked against this clustered data to verify formal correlation, and LoRA fine-tuning reflecting public feedback is applied to derive a refined architectural identity that embeds collective perception. The research received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award of Korea.
