Roof · Singapore · 2019
A new landmark lighting up Marina Bay — a free-form laminated-bamboo canopy.
A translucent, large-span canopy replaces the terminal’s narrow existing roof, extending broadly over interior and exterior areas that once had no shade to give generous protection from sun and rain. It maximises comfort and transforms the terminal into a vibrant new architectural field.
At night the softly glowing, wave-like roof cradles the Ferris wheel like a cloud in the sky, creating a fantastical scene in which the wheel seems to float lightly above it. It stands in bold contrast to the rigid forms of the surrounding architecture while blending naturally into the waterfront.
The key material, laminated bamboo, is an outstanding renewable resource that grows to construction size in just 3–5 years. With higher compressive strength than timber or concrete and a strength-to-weight ratio close to steel, it presents a new model for sustainable architecture.
Structurally, slender circular steel columns form a three-dimensional frame that supports the lightweight roof. Tilting the columns smoothly connects the structural grid of the existing terminal below with that of the new roof. The four beam types forming a 3×3 m grid in plan each carry only a single curvature, yet combine precisely to complete one vast, beautiful free-form surface.
